The word literally means “being in front” or taking precedence over others; therefore leading or guiding them as well as being composed in front of them. Therefore, the meaning of Imamat is the same as عمر عمي. This means being in front, being in front of others. This meaning is also used in the Quran when God says: «اقرأ الذكر من فوق» (read Surat al-Jum’a) The original meaning of Imamah was that which was close to Allah , being next to Allah. Adam, Noah and Abraham are examples given by the Prophet Muhammad “.. These three men were the leaders of their people because they were the closest to Allah.” Even though Imamah originally indicated being close or being with Allah, this concept has been extended meaning leadership and guidance of a man over his wife and children as well as by a man over his community, nation or group. In other words, it means taking precedence over others. Imamah is an important term in the Islamic faith and is mentioned extensively in the Quran. The term “Imam” refers to a believer who leads his community in prayer, and also leads them into better paths. It also refers to someone who helps others understand and define Islam and Muslim identity, and teaches them about virtues and vices, righteousness and evilness. So at one level, Imam can be understood as a teacher, guide or mentor; but at another level it denotes the leader of the community such as a religious or political leader (Caliph). An Imam will also usually hold regular meetings with his followers. Ultra-orthodox Muslims, Chistians and Jews have denounced the concept of Imamat as heretical, blasphemy or apostasy; while Muslims, Hindus & Sikhs have disagreed on whether Imamat means pre-eminent leadership or only the leadership of preaching . The status of Imamah is one of the most controversial subjects in Islam. Some ultra-orthodox groups consider it heresy. Al-Imamah (the leadership of preaching), Al-Imamah (the leadership of knowledge), Al-Imamah (the leadership of hearing) and Al-Imamah (the leadership of understanding) are all ideas that the Shias had on the right to be leaders in Islam. cfa1e77820
