In this article, we're going to take a deep dive into what Object Desktop is and how it can help you. If you're a fan of Stardock's cross-platform app, you've probably been wondering if there was a way to use the Object Desktop with Linux, or if there was some sort of alternative. The short answer is... no. But, we're going to give the long answer too. But first there's a bit of history to cover so we can put this into perspective. If you're unfamiliar with Object Desktop, it's Stardock's cross-platform user interface for Windows and MacOS that has been around since the days of Infusion and was later rebranded after Stardock purchased Purism and continued development on the open source platform called Librem 5 (which we'll talk more about momentarily). You can download Object Desktop from Stardock's website . The current version of Object Desktop is Full 271. The latest version 1.5.2 was released in September 2015, and was based on Qt 5. The current version of QT is 5.12, which was released in April 2019. If you're familiar with the development cycle of Windows 10, or any other modern desktop operating system for that matter, you'll notice that it's a little different here. Microsoft's Windows 10 development cycle is three years long. Object Desktop releases are on par with this development cycle, but are 18 months to two years behind the real-time releases of Windows 10 for about 18 months to two years. For instance, Windows 10 was released in 2015 and its first major update was called the "Anniversary Update" which shipped about sixteen months later in 2016 and became known as version 1607. Since the big Windows 10 update in 2015, called " Threshold 2 ", Stardock has released six major updates for Object Desktop using the major version number of the current version of Windows 10. So, since "Threshold 2", we've seen Object Desktop release version changes as follows: Win10: 1607 (2016), 1703 (2017), 1709 (2018), and 1803 (2019). The most recent release of 1.5.2 was based on Qt 5.5, which was released back in May 2015 . It's worth noting that Qt’s wiki page says it is released under LGPLv3 with Qt being AGPLv3 compatible . This means that Qt 5.5 Software Development Kit (SDK) is free of charge to use for development purposes, but it can be relicensed under other licenses like GPLv3 or Apache License 2.0 if it is used in proprietary software (the terms "free" and "open source" are often used interchangeably). The point of this is that, even though Object Desktop has been updated pretty frequently in the last two years, the current version 1.5.2 is at least 6 months behind the latest stable Windows 10 feature update.
